I'm sorry about bringing this up again, and maybe it's already been put to bed, but I really have a problem with Ralph Orlove's clickbaiting title. Teen mows down grandma, heads for the twitter... I mean, it's not like 2drnk2care chick a while back; yes, both were cute, both were in a car, and yes, people died as a result. But todays girl had a accident. That's all, she didn't see a woman in a crosswalk. She didn't run away from the scene, there were no drugs, she wasn't texting merrily away. It was an accident. Lord knows I have had my share and then some, but I have been lucky and the only one I have damaged has been myself. Had someone been walking down the street when I hit the wet leaves, they would have died. Had someone been out when I fixated on my friends bike, I might have hit them. This girl will live the rest of her life knowing that she killed a woman with her car, and there is no way that can ever change. every time someone goes on the net and looks her up, she know exactly what they will find in her past, no matter how old she gets. It was an accident. Yes tragic, yes preventable, but an accident. Not malicious, she didn't think to herself, how many points was it for grandparents again? It wasn't like she thought, the only thing left for today is oh I dont know, random death? But now she has been splashed across the page of one of the larger (est?) internet spheres available, and accused/convicted/who needs a trial anyway/publicly shamed. All this at the ripe old age of 19. I honestly fear for her life, and it wouldn't surprise me if she tried to take it. The next day she is sitting around the house consoling herself with food thinking about how rotten the situation is, and she tweets a pic of what she's eating. It's a connected lifestyle, and she's trying to reach out. Well I guess it worked, because now she cant escape even if she wanted to. And that wall of crap keeps getting pushed higher and higher by all the bloggers trying to get that vital click. Is this type of sensationalism all that different than the girl who posted about Paul Walker? Yeah, the scale is different (she wasn't famous with millions of rabid fans to jump in on her behalf, and he wasn't saying gee glad your dead), but the intent was the same. Clicks at all costs, since I dont have to pay them anyway. How long was spent on tweaking that headline? How many times did it get re-written, only to get struck down for not being quite "enough."

I guess I am just getting old, I don't understand throwing a kid to the wolves in such an inhumane way. So, I guess I wont worry about introducing myself for a bit, I'll probably get myself banned for this. But I think it needs saying, so here it is. Have some giraffes and a rally car for your trouble.

I agree. Oppo would never ban you for this.

Completely agree with you. People fuck up and really if it wasn't because of gross negligence due to intoxication or using a cell phone at the time of the incident, there is no need for the level of public shaming the internet can dole out. It comes down to does every incident like this need to be publicized in this way? when I read the head line I thought she hit her grandma while tweeting about her leftovers. . .

Let me put it like this... there is a reason why most of us don't visit the FP anymore... Sure.. she COULD have done other things than posting stuff on twitter.. but this is a teen who's just had a pretty fuking bad moment.. She needed some way to tell the world she's having a bad time.. Jalopnik should not have done this.

You would never get banned for having a differing opinion, neither from here or Jalopnik proper.

In fact, I agree with you. I chose not to get into any comments on that post because that only furthers the attention this gets. I hope she is allowed to move on.

I think that's what was bugging me the most. I like to hang out here in oppo because it's relatively "sensationalist free." Yeah, there may be a few drama queens, even a self righteous ass hat or two; but that hat gets passed around on a pretty regular basis,a nd everyone gets a chance to wear it. I have my own in 7 1/4, 4x beaverfelt. I mean, yeah, that kind of writing has it's place I suppose, but I just am pretty sure it's not here, and I like to think that the folks that contribute here hold, and maybe instill, higher standards.

I just don't go to FP anymore. Between the sensationalized "articles" and the comments, it just raises my blood pressure too much. My stupid tolerance seems to be getting lower with age.
